Category Ownership

Thailand's First -86°C Coffee

Challenge

The business did not have an attention problem. It had no attention.

SOSO COFFEE had been operating at a loss for more than a year.

Located in a residential neighborhood rather than a commercial district, the café had no natural foot traffic, limited brand awareness, and almost no marketing budget.

Average daily revenue was approximately THB 3,000, with around 30 cups sold per day.

The business was not suffering from poor products. It was suffering from a lack of attention.

Opportunity

Create the category before competing inside one.

The opportunity was not creating a new product. It was bringing a proven idea into a market where it did not exist, and becoming the first brand to own it.

Market research revealed that while the concept had already proven successful in China, Thailand had no -86°C Coffee.

Instead of competing inside an existing category, we decided to create one.

Strategy

Own Thailand's First -86°C Coffee.

Rather than building another coffee product, we built a market position.

The strategy focused on one objective: own the category before anyone else does.

Everything from product development to social content, creator engagement, PR, and media positioning served a single goal: Thailand's First -86°C Coffee.

Outcome

A loss-making neighborhood café became one of Thailand's most talked-about coffee brands.

A single market opportunity transformed a loss-making neighborhood café into one of Thailand's most talked-about coffee brands.

More importantly, it proved that strategic positioning can outperform advertising budgets, and that the right product, launched at the right time in the right market, can reshape an entire business.
